Charles Yurkewicz, Psy.D., is a psychologist at the NYU Child Study Center's Long Island Campus. Dr. Yurkewicz specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents through assessment, psychotherapy, and family consultation. He is cognitive-behaviorally oriented in his approach. Dr. Yurkewicz has worked extensively with children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and is particularly interested in fostering a meaningful and fulfilling life for adolescents by integrating research from the area of positive psychology. In addition to his extensive experience in assessment and treatment of children and adolescents, Dr. Yurkewicz has also worked with adults presenting with a wide range of psychopathology. He conducts evaluations to aid in the differential diagnosis of ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and personality disorders in adults. Dr. Yurkewicz conducts research in the area of positive psychology that focuses on the manner in which individuals thrive and navigate life successfully.
Dr. Yurkewicz received his B.A. in psychology and philosophy from Binghamton University and M.S. and Psy.D. in school psychology from St. John's University. He completed post-graduate training work with children and adolescents diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities in the East Meadow School District.
Prior to joining the staff at the CSC, Dr. Yurkewicz was a school psychologist for the REACH program for students with autism and other developmental disabilities in the East Meadow School District. Additionally, he had a private practice in the Franklin Square area. Dr. Yurkewicz has served as an adjunct professor at Dowling College and currently teaches at St. John's University. His courses include developmental psychology, history of psychology, positive psychology, interviewing and counseling, and practica in psychological assessment for undergraduate and graduate level students. Dr. Yurkewicz is currently the Assistant Head of Psychological Assessment for YAI-National Institute for People with Disabilities and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at St. John's University.
Dr. Yurkewicz has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Research on Adolescence and the Journal of Personality. His own research in positive psychology has been published in the Journal of Positive Psychology and the Journal of Adolescence. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, and the National Association of School Psychology.
