Scott Shaffer, M.D.

Scott Shaffer, M.D. is Chief Resident of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center. His interests include psychotherapy, developmental disabilities, medical education, and administrative psychiatry.

Dr. Shaffer graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in biological sciences and M.D. from the Rutgers University / UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School joint B.A and M.D. program. He was inducted in 2005 into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and was the recipient of the Academic Excellence in Psychiatry Award in 2006. Dr. Shaffer completed his general psychiatry training at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he served as Chief Resident of Butler Hospital. While at Brown, Dr. Shaffer founded the Alpert Medical School chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and co-founded the Medical Student Education committee which was created to improve the educational experience of medical students during their psychiatry rotation.

Dr. Shaffer is active in the area of medical education and received the Gold Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. He has taught several lectures to medical students including a lecture on psychiatric interviewing and the mental status exam, and a lecture on supportive psychotherapy. He was a co-author of “Supportive Psychotherapy: A Crash Course for Medical Students,” which was published in Academic Psychiatry.

Dr. Shaffer is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and currently serves on the Gold Humanism Honor Society’s National Planning Committee.
