Educational Program
The Asperger Institute at the Child Study Center has developed the Advanced Learning Lab, a research-based model educational program for academically-gifted youth with Asperger Syndrome.
The Lab has opened for the 2007–2008 academic year for intellectually-gifted ninth graders with Asperger Syndrome. The state-of-the-art program (PDF) provides optimal educational opportunities for gifted learners in their areas of strength, while supplying the specialized social, emotional, and learning support that is lacking in typical school settings.
In addition, the Lab is developing Asperger-specific curriculum materials for both public and private schools that find themselves challenged with increasing numbers of middle and high school students with Asperger Syndrome. Special focus is placed on individualized programs with real-life opportunities for social learning and development of life skills.
The educational program is also piloting a cooperative home school program that will be adaptable to parent communities across the country who wish to organize their own programming. Ultimately, our goal is to provide families, educators, and therapists with legitimate, authentic, and empowering alternatives to the suffering that so many children diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome experience in traditional private and public educational placements today.
