Introduction

Compulsive Skin Picking (CSP), also known as dermatillomania, is an impulse disorder characterized by the repetitive picking at one’s own skin to the point of causing damage. CSP has obsessive-compulsive features that are quite similar to OCD, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Trichotillomania. It is sometimes found in individuals with these disorders, as well as in patients with certain medical conditions. Though not currently listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - IV (DSM-IV) some researchers believe CSP should be listed as a separate diagnostic entity.
