Managing Separation Anxiety Disorder may require a combination of treatments.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps the child reshape his/her thinking, recognize the exaggerated nature of the fear, and develop strategies to manage the physical sensations, negative thoughts and problem behaviors. Through CBT the child learns, in a step–by–step fashion, to master the situations that cause separation anxiety.
Family therapy also may help teach the family about the disorder and help family members better support the child during periods of anxiety.
When the symptoms interfere with the child's daily functioning, medication may be included as part of the treatment. These medications may include what have been called the SSRIs: the most commonly known is Prozac.
