Asperger Syndrome is a neurobiologically-based condition considered to be on the autism spectrum. Children with Asperger Syndrome have difficulty with the development of appropriate social skills, communicating with peers, appreciating nonverbal cues, and perseverative thoughts, behaviors, and interests. Many also experience problems with physical awkwardness and sensory sensitivities.
It is a lifelong condition, but it may not always be recognized in childhood because affected children can seem high-functioning in so many ways. Despite average to superior cognitive ability, individuals with Asperger Syndrome may experience a wide array of problems that can have significant consequences on their educational, vocational, and personal lives. Early diagnosis is important as it helps families and schools understand the social, self-regulatory, and organizational needs that often go unaddressed. Appropriate treatment and educational intervention can positively change life outcomes.
