Visiting Professor Seminar: Why Do People Hurt Themselves? Recent Advances in the Understanding of Suicide and Self-Injury

Presenter: Matthew K. Nock, Ph.D.

John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences, Director of the Laboratory for Clinical and Developmental Research, Department of Psychology, Harvard University

Self-injurious behaviors are among the leading causes of death worldwide.  Yet, many fundamental questions about suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury have remained largely unanswered due to the inherent challenges associated with studying these behaviors, including: Who engages in self-injurious behavior?  When do these behaviors typically begin?  Why do people hurt themselves?  And how can we best predict and prevent such behavior?  Dr. Nock's research is focused on answering these questions using several complementary approaches (e.g., epidemiologic surveys, laboratory-based behavioral experiments, clinic-based studies).  This presentation will describe recent advances in the understanding, assessment, and treatment of self-injurious behaviors, as well as some of the most promising directions for future research on this devastating problem.

Time: 11:00 am–12:00 pm

Place: NYU Child Study Center
16th Floor Auditorium
215 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY 10016
