NYU Child Study Center ADHD/Disruptive Behavior Disorders Service Externship Description & Outline 2007–2008

The Externship is designed for advanced graduate students (3rd year and above) in clinical and school-clinical psychology programs. The training focuses on clinical behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches with children, adolescents, and their families who present primarily with externalizing disorders in an out-patient setting. We emphasize the clinically sensitive integration of evidence-based, empirically-supported approaches to the extent they inform on treatment in any given situation. To be sure, many of our identified patients present with comorbidities and our ADHD training faculty have interests in broad areas, such that our externs also have significant exposure to children with anxiety disorders and Asperger’s and other developmental spectrum disorders. Several of us have special interests in such areas as selective mutism and OCD. The ADHD/Disruptive Behavior Disorders Externship director is Steven Kurtz, Ph.D., ABPP. Lori Evans, Ph.D. is the Center’s Director of Psychology Training.

  • Evaluations: The extern will be trained to conduct comprehensive evaluations of anxiety and depressive disorders, consisting of structuring clinical interviews and self-report measures. Case presentations usually consist of a conceptualization, brief literature review, and overview of the treatment approach. This practice exercise aims to help prepare students for advanced training requirements of internship.
