About the Katz Lectures

This is a free annual program which provides two perspectives on learning differences:

  • successful individuals who have overcome their learning disabilities share their stories
  • experts in the field present current research on prevention, identification, and treatment of learning differences.

The goal of this series is to educate the public about learning differences and psychiatric disorders, which can rob children of their childhood. With early diagnosis and intervention, children can lead successful lives both academically and socially.

This annual lecture series has been made possible by the generosity and love of Child Study Center Board member Howard Katz, his wife Ellen, and the rest of the Katz Family. Their beloved son and brother, Adam, struggled with learning disabilities and ADHD his whole life and died prematurely. The Katz family created this living memorial to him as a way to increase awareness among students, parents, and educators about these disorders by featuring both a prominent individual who has overcome his learning disability and achieved great success and also scientists who are advancing our understanding of these disorders.

Previous presenters in this lecture series include:

  • Chuck Close, internationally celebrated painter, photographer, and printmaker
  • Gaston Caperton, President of the College Board and two-term Governor of West Virginia
  • Barbara Corcoran, Founder and Chairman of The Corcoran Group
  • Jonathan Mooney, Executive Director of Project Eye-To-Eye and Author of Learning Outside the Lines.
