New Research From NYU Child Study Center Suggests Early Stimulant Treatment for ADHD Does Not Contribute to Substance Abuse Later in Life
"Age of Methylphenidate Treatment Initiation in Children with ADHD and Later Substance Abuse: Prospective Follow-Up into Adulthood"
New findings from a study conducted by Salvatore Mannuzza, Ph.D., Rachel G. Klein, Ph.D., Francisco X. Castellanos, M.D., and colleagues at the NYU Child Study Center and the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research have been published online by The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP), the official journal of the American Psychiatric Association. The new findings suggest that stimulant treatment for children with ADHD relatively early in childhood does not confer increased risk for negative outcomes, and may have beneficial long-term effects.
