TST has been adapted to address issues related to substance abuse. Spearheaded by Liza Suárez, Ph.D., this adaptation was developed to focus on helping those with traumatic stress identify ways of managing traumatic reminders present in their environment without turning to substance use.
The foundation of this adaptation is based on the knowledge that those with a trauma history often become behaviorally dysregulated as a way to manage their traumatic stress. Therefore, this adaptation seeks to assist in fostering positive coping skills to manage negative emotional states while at the same time equipping the social environment or system of care with the tools necessary to decrease environmental threats and traumatic reminders.
TST-SA is in use at several agencies around the country, including the Urban youth Trauma Center at the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
